Pope Francis Nominates New Secretary of Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology

(Vatican Press Release, September 2, 2017): Pope Francis has nominated Monsignor Pasquale Iacobone of the Diocese of Andria to the position of Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, the Vatican organization responsible for the study and maintenance of Christian catacombs in Italy.

Monsignor Iacobone, a native of Canosa di Puglia (site of Puglia's largest Christian catacomb), currently is on the faculty of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and is an official of the Vatican's Pontifica Accademia Cultorum Martyrum and Pontifical Council for Culture.

He has authored and edited several books about religion and iconography, including Misterium Trinitatis. Dogma e iconografia nell'Italia medievale (1997), and Maria a Roma (2009), in addition to writing for scholarly journals and popular publications on topics such as theology, culture, and world religions.
