Jewish Museum of Rome

The Jewish Museum inside the Synagogue on the lungotevere in Rome has acquired recently a large new display space which will create three floors of collections illustrating the history of the Jewish community and Judaism in Rome. Most of the new areas will be located in the former basement of the Temple. With the financial support of Italy’s Ministry for the Arts and Municipality of Rome, allocated through the campaign for "Roma Capitale", the museum will provide multimedia exhibits in addition to its permanent displays, mainly of photographs, documents and liturgical objects, and complete an inventory of all its collections. Work on the site is expected to be completed by mid-2002; a new museum, eight times larger than the previous institution, will open its doors to the many thousands of visitors expected to visit and learn about Europe’s oldest continuous Jewish community.
